So-called “drone hackers” Department 13 (ASX:D13) has launched a new product line to help law enforcement analyse drones which have been used for illegal activity.

D13 told its investors this morning that it had launched the MESMER-EX product, which is being built as a forensic service to examine drones used for illegal purposes.

The company said that the new product would be able to measure things such as:

  • Telemetry and pattern of life analysis
  • Geo-spatial data
  • Power and battery levels
  • Sensor data analaysis such as video feed or image capture
  • Payload modification, and
  • Any modifications made to the drone

By giving law enforcement the ability to analyse a drone which had been captured, D13 would be able to analyse how the drones are being utilised by criminals.

D13 is currently in the US market selling its wares, with CEO Jonathan Hunter recently talking to law enforcement officials in Washington DC.

At this meeting, Hunter impressed the need for a holistic approach to illegal drone enforcement.

“It’s critical that we understand the complete lifecycle of how adversaries fulfil their illicit missions using drones,” he is reported to have said.

“Until we understand all the available data about drones used for these illicit purposes we will be at a distinct disadvantage to our criminal adversaries.”

There is no guarantee of uptake of the new product, so caution is advised if considering this stock for your portfolio.

D13 has previously pitched itself around its flagship MESMER technology – which promises to be able to effectively ‘hack’ a drone in the air and bring it down safely.

MESMER uses its own methods to detect and mitigate radio controlled devices – such as drones and unmanned vehicles such as submersibles.

It can reportedly operate as a stand-alone option or on the top of existing hardware solutions.
